Tawakkol Karman's Quote About Hijab

Tawakkol Karman's perfect reply to a journalist when she was asked about the logic behind observing hijab.

Tawakkol Karman About Hijab

Where Hijab is viewed as a symbol oppression in today's scenario, the quote of Nobel laureate Tawakkol Karman about her logic behind wearing hijab is the perfect hitting against those pseudo-intellectuals who see modernity veiled under vulgarity.

Before discussing what was her reply about Hijab, let's know about Tawakkol Karman briefly.

Who is Tawakkol Karman?

Tawakkol Karman also known as the "Iron Woman" and "Mother of Revolution", is a Yemeni Journalist, Human Right Activist, and Politician.

She Co-founded the group "Women Journalists Without Chains" in 2005.

Tawakkol is a recipient of Nobel Peace Prize 2011 along with two others, becoming the first Yemeni, the first Arab woman, and the second Muslim woman to win a Nobel Prize and the second youngest Nobel Peace Laureate to date.

Tawakkol Karman about Hijab.

When asked about her Hijab by Journalists and how it is not proportionate with her level of intellect and education, Tawakkol Karman replied politely:
Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I am wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilisation that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It's the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times.

In this scenario, wherein countless of fallacious agendas are being aired and propagated about Islam, particularly related to Muslim women and their rights, this quote of Tawakkol Karman disputes one of the many lies. It does cements the fact that Islam is the most perfect and progressive religion in terms of empowering women.

Let's discuss some faq related to hijab.

✅ Why does Islam only ask women to observe Hijab?

This is one of the most common misconceptions against Islam that it only prescribes hijab for women.

However, in the Qur'an, Allah first mentions hijab for men and then women.

✅ Why do only Muslim women wear veil (burqa)?

Understand that hijab is ordained for both women and man but NOT identically.

What does this mean? Women and Men have different biological configuration and this is the basis for their respective roles they perform in the society. An attire of a woman can't be identical to that of a man.

Who could know it better than the One who designs humans. Accordingly, He prescribes Hijab for man and woman differently.
